Lettering

Illustrative lettering

A selection of illustrated words and phrases.

Lettering is the art of drawing letters. It’s different from both calligraphy (the art of writing letters) and typography (the art of using letters), in which you work with sets of repeatable letter shapes.

Lettering is created like an image. Each letter in a phrase acts as an illustration, each has a unique shape and role in the composition. It is not a font. Whether using traditional media or a vector program, each letter is created from scratch, with a specific word in mind, to fit the picture as a whole.
